Concept Phase

Welcome to my first devlog!

What I'll be going over in this devlog are the assets I have created, the backstory, my wireframe for the game, and finally my list of priorities.

These are the some of the main heads of prominent characters in the game. The two young characters, the male on the left and female on the right, are the stories true protagonist that you get to choose to play as, at least in the very beginning. As depicted by their facial expressions, the male protagonist is seen as a bit less animated and more reserved emotions, while the female protagonist is more animated and bubbly in her expressions. The old man is the concept for Professor Tree, a reference to how Pokemon professor's are named after species of trees. I am still working on his other emotions, but I can say he is a relaxed and sweet old man and his expressions will reflect that.

Their backstory? They all live in a small farm town located in the Hildso region called Wellgrove, which is known for its abundance of wheat, crops and sunflowers. Since it is nearing the end of fall, the only crops that are still growing is wheat and sunflowers, and some plots are already retired in preparation for winter. While tilling the fields one day to readjust the soil, Professor Tree was surprised to find an unknown Critter larvae squirming in the newly dug up earth. After a month of examining the growing creature, whose form had changed with age, he decides to let the protagonist take the new Critter as a coming of age gift. With a Critter of their own, the protagonist would now be able to choose if they want to continue living in their secluded village, or explore the outside world with the help of their Critter. When the protagonist gets the text from the Professor to come and receive their very first Critter, they are ecstatic and head down the short road to the Professor's home.

The Critter that the main character receives is this little guy, Culex. Since his design is based on a mosquito, he is named after the scientific name for "mosquito" which is Culex. I designed him to try and be as cute and defenseless/non-threatening as possible, while still retaining the clear resemblance of a mosquito. When he consumes the protagonist, he takes on a more human look while still having some of his pre-evolution appearances. No matter which gender of the protagonist he consumes, his evolution looks the same.

His motive for consuming the protagonist and everything around him? Strangely enough, some mosquitos do have a small hibernation period that begins at the end of fall nearing winter, and like a bear, they must "bulk up" in attempts to survive the cold. The poor little guy is hungry and has to consume as much as he can to try and survive the winter.

Designing Culex was a blast, and he went through several different changes before I landed on his final look. The body, tail and appendages saw the most change as I tried to find a design that looked cute while flying and standing. His head and fur collar remained relatively the same with only slight differences, like the antennae shape and length of the dome of his head. While his design and linear are complete, I still am working on several different coloring choices, and I think I'm nearing the decision mark!

Finally, this is a kind of crude but useful wireframe I designed of how the story will more or less play out. While some changes might have to be made, the main storyline will remain the same. Hopefully soon I'll have a more appealing to the eye wireframe, but for now this works for me.

My top priorities are to:

  • Create bodies for the heads
  • Create Slugitty the slug kitten Critter
  • Create the people Culex will consume
  • Start sketching out the town layout

Thanks for reading, hopefully things continue well!

Until next time, see you later! --CDChalk
